[11/01/2011] Wireless Barcode Scanners

The wireless barcode scanners are handheld devices, which are powered by batteries and are capable of transmitting data from a few feet away. They have a base, which doubles as a battery charger and a single base could be capable of communicating to a number of scanners simultaneously. Their obvious advantages have led to an increased popularity and fierce competition amongst the barcode scanners’ manufacturers, and newer and better models are released on the market each year.

The Wasp is one of these manufacturers, whose Freedom series products are well-known. Three of the Wasp products in this segment deserve a mention and these are the Freedom WWS500, WWS800, and WWS850. The first two are equipped with CCD scan engine and can scan products from 12 inches, while the WW850 is laser-based and has a scanning range of 25 inches; the 850 and 800 models work with Bluetooth wireless technology and are capable of transmitting data to up to 160 feet from the base. All the products in this series are sturdy, designed for heavy use, and have long battery life.

Metrologic is another manufacturer, well-known for its quality products – it sells various wireless models with the MS1633 FocusBT, MS9521 Voyager, and SP5535 OptimusSBT being probably the three best-selling ones. The MS1633 FocusBT is a Bluetooth scanner, which can connect to various host interfaces, reads 1D and 2D barcode lables, has LED light source, and Imager image sensor. Since it is unidirectional and has 33-inch scanning distance, it is ideal for many retailers and various industries as well. It is powered by a Lithium-ion battery and its base can connect to up to seven Bluetooth devices.

Datalogic also sells excellent cordless scanners, which are priced according to the features that they come with. The PM8300 is one of the most widely sold models from this manufacturer and is a reliable scanner, which comes with a few versions on its own. The supported host interfaces are keyboard wedge, RS-232, RS-485 (BC8060 Only), Wand, and USB and the product is shipped with cables, power supply, and base station, which can be ordered separately as well.
