[22/05/2010] Corded Barcode Scanners
The most commonly used barcode scanners today are the corded barcode scanners; they are connected to a computer via a keyboard wedge. The keyboard wedge can be either hardware or software, but in the case of barcode scanners, hardware keyboard wedge is typically used. The wedge allows the computer to interpret the signals sent from the scanner, just like it would interpret data from keyboard; this in turn, makes possible the data to be used directly with existing software and POS programs, without having to modify them.
The barcode scanners are great time-savers, especially in the retail stores and the large organizations, where thousands of barcode labels are read daily; if it wasn’t for the barcode scanners, every single product details would have to be typed in on the keyboard, which would require considerably more time. The barcodes considerably reduce the margin for error as well, especially with the introduction of the latest barcode readers models, which are not only more accurate, but allow wrinkled and even partially damaged barcode labels to be read.
